Stainless steel grades

Not all stainless steel is the same—different grades are made for different jobs, and it’s worth knowing the difference when choosing a kitchen worktop. The most common choice is 304 stainless steel. It strikes a good balance between strength, resistance to rust, and cost, which is why it’s used in most domestic and commercial kitchens.

The mix of chromium and nickel in 304 helps stop rust and stains, making it ideal for places where food is prepared and surfaces are cleaned regularly. If you’re in a harsher environment, like by the sea or in certain commercial settings, you might look at grade 316 instead. This contains molybdenum, which gives extra protection against corrosion, especially from salt. For most homes, though, the extra cost isn’t really needed

There are cheaper grades like 430, but these don’t stand up to corrosion as well, so they’re rarely used for quality worktops. In the end, the right grade depends on how you’ll use your worktop.

For nearly all kitchens, a well-made 304 stainless steel surface will give you the durability and hygiene you need. It has been the standard for years for good reason. When you’re planning a new worktop, your fabricator will be able to advise you on the best option. Two worktops might look the same, but what’s underneath can make a real difference.
