Stainless steel finishes

The finish you choose for a stainless steel worktop can make a real difference to both how it looks and how easy it is to live with. While the steel itself doesn’t change, different finishes create very different effects. Most kitchen worktops use a brushed finish, which is made by running fine lines along the surface. This gives the steel a soft, satin look that’s easy on the eye.

Brushed stainless is popular because it doesn’t show up scratches as much and helps cut down on glare, one of the reasons it’s the first choice in professional and domestic kitchens. It stays looking tidy even with heavy use and is simple to keep clean. You can also get polished stainless steel, which is much shinier and reflects a lot more light.

It’s more decorative, but it does show up fingerprints, marks and scratches, so it’s usually kept for feature areas rather than worktops that see a lot of action. Some manufacturers offer textured or patterned finishes, which can hide scratches even better and are sometimes used in modern kitchen designs. Still, brushed stainless remains the most common choice.

When picking a finish, think about how you’ll actually use your worktop, not just how it looks in a showroom. A glossy surface might catch your eye, but it can be much harder to keep looking good. For most kitchens, brushed stainless steel is the practical option, it looks professional, wears well, and keeps its good looks for years. That’s one of the reasons it’s stayed so popular.
